Project Partners

Descriptions of the collaborators on this project, and their roles.

To meet the goals of this project, McMurray Métis partnered with the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) and InnoTech Alberta (ITA), both of which have extensive experience in designing and implementing environmental monitoring programs in Alberta.

Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI)

ABMI is an independent, not-for-profit member-based organization providing scientifically credible products and services on Alberta’s biodiversity to provincial resource decision-makers. The ABMI monitors, evaluates and communicates status and trend of Alberta’s species, native landcover, and human footprint to support provincial land-use. The ABMI was incorporated in 2007, and has since provided scientific data and refined knowledge to key decision-makers spanning government, industry, environmental organizations, and the general public.

The ABMI’s Community-Based Monitoring and Engagement Unit collaborates with and supports Indigenous communities across the province in establishing and running sustainable and internally-driven biodiversity monitoring programs via capacity building, study design support, data analysis, and knowledge translation.

Role: ABMI has been an advisor on the project and has helped with selection of camera locations, and conducted training with McMurray Métis staff to upload camera data, tag species in camera images, and to conduct quality control of the database processes. In addition, ABMI has led analyses of the data, and has supported McMurray Métis in sharing results from the project with the creation of this report.

InnoTech Alberta (ITA)

InnoTech Alberta (ITA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Innovates, facilitates the conversion of applied research to secure economic, social and environmental benefits for Alberta. ITA operates laboratories and performs applied research development in key areas to address industry and government challenges in Alberta, and links these to commercial outcomes.

Role: ITA has been an advisor on the project and has helped with selection of camera locations, and conducted training of McMurray Métis staff to deploy cameras and conduct quality control of the field data collection. In addition, ITA has supported data analyses and sharing of results.
